"Chernecha Hora" ( _uk. Чернеча гора), (literally, Monk's Hill) - a mount by the Dnieper river near Kaniv in Ukraine, where the remains of the famous Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko are buried since 1861. Chernecha hora is considered to be a historical, natural and cultural monument of All-Ukrainian importance and national relic of Ukraine. [http://www.kaniv.net/org.php?l=13 Kaniv.net Directory, in Ukrainian] ]

In the past, the mount was a part of the ancient Kaniv Orthodox Monastery, where many hetmans of Ukrainian Cossacks had been buried. [http://www.kaniv.net/org.php?l=13 Kaniv.net Directory, in Ukrainian] ]

In 1978, the hill was the site where Oleksa Hirnyk burned himself to death in protest of Soviet suppression of the Ukrainian language, culture and history [ [http://www.artukraine.com/commcrimes/index.htm Crimes of Communism Against Ukraine And Her People, Art Ukraine web-site] ] .

A Church in memory of Taras Shevchenko ("Tarasova Cerkva") is designated to be built here.
