Born in
Delaware County, Pennsylvania in 1799 and returning to his maker in Philadelphia,February 12 1868 . He entered the navy as amidshipman onNovember 30 1814 , and became lieutenant onJanuary 13 1825 . During the Mexican American war he commanded theUSS Princeton and served in the Union blockading squadron. He was promoted tocaptain in 1855.Civil War
At the beginning of the
civil war was sent toChina to bring home theUSS Hartford . He was then assigned to the command of thePhiladelphia Naval Shipyard , and subsequently became governor of the naval asylum in that City. He was promoted to berear admiral on the retired list,July 25 1866 .
