26 August 1934 –6 April 1996 ), was an English radio and presenter and journalist, primarily known for his work onBBC Radio 4 .A scholarship boy from
Bolton School , he read French and Russian atMagdalen College, Oxford .He spent hisNational Service monitoring Soviet radio traffic in theBaltic Sea ,and joined theBBC Russian Service .He was banned from entering theSoviet Union as an alleged former spy.In 1968 he joined mainstream journalism and then studio presentation,working on "
The World This Weekend ", "PM" and "The World at One ".With his fluent Russian he moved back to front-line journalism at the time of the Gorbachev revolution,making a series of award-winning documentary programmes.
