- IOLVIP
The Intraocular Lens for Visually Impaired Patients (IOLVIP) is an
intraocular lens aiming to treat patients with age relatedmacular degeneration . The IOLVIP procedure involves the surgical implantation of a pair of lenses that divert the image away from the damaged macula and onto a healthy part of the retina using the principals of theGalilean telescope .The procedure was pioneered in Italy and has since been brought to the UK and USA, and can be used to treat both the 'wet' type of macular degeneration, and the more common 'dry' type. A telescopic simulator can be used to assess whether the surgery will be helpful, and to establish the best rotation for the two lenses.
