1980 under a different name, selling surfboards and wax. The first mall store opened in1981 inSanta Monica Place inSanta Monica, California . By1987 , they had a total of 21 stores. In1993 , the company was operating 60 stores and went public. Currently, there are 859 stores and 76 outlets.
