Leyhill Prison

Leyhill Prison

Leyhill Prison is a low-security ('open') HM Prison situated in South Gloucestershire, England. (The prison has a GL12 post code and so is often erroneously described as being in Gloucestershire.)

The two famous inmates at Leyhill are arguably Leslie Grantham, who served the final part of a sentence for murder at the prison before being released in 1977 and going on to land himself numerous roles as a TV actor, most notably as Den Watts in EastEnders; and T. Dan Smith, the Newcastle politician disgraced by the Poulson affair. (Indeed it was Smith who encouraged Grantham to go into acting on his release.).

Leyhill is a prison for prisoners aged 21 and over who are deemed "low risk", which usually includes non-violent offenders as well as violent offenders who have made good progress during their time at more secure prisons.
