George Ferguson, RWA, (born 22 March 1947) is a British architect, who has made a significant contribution to architecture, town planning and design in the South West of England and Europe.

Biography

Ferguson was born in Winchester, Hampshire, England, on 22nd March 1947.

He is the Honorary architect to the RWA. He studied at the University of Bristol School of Architecture from 1965 to 1968 and then took a B.Arch from 1969 to 1971. During the 1970's he also took evening life classes at the RWA. He is currently national council member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

During his career as an architect his practice has received 2 RIBA awards, 4 Civic Trust awards as well as awards from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors for craftsmanship and conservation. George Ferguson was also awarded an honorary MA from the University of Bristol for his services to planning and architecture. During the last twenty-five years he has shown his work at the RWA Autumn Exhibitions, also at the RIBA Awards Exhibition in London and on various occasions at The Architecture Centre in Bristol.

The Tobacco Factory

George bought the last remaining part of the Old Wills Tobacco site on Raleigh Road, Southville, Bristol, saving it from demolition. Through his vision it has become a model of urban regeneration and is now a multi-use building housing a restaurant, performing arts school, apartments, a café bar, a performance venue and more.

Inspired by the Manchester Independents campaign, George Ferguson has decided to launch a Bristol based campaign from the Tobacco Factory. The purpose of the campaign is to encourage the support and patronage of independent outlets and businesses to help redress the balance that has swung strongly in favour of the multiples at the expense of local character and enterprise. Business at the Tobacco Factory epitomises this, with home grown enterprises, such as [http://www.fanaticdesign.co.uk Fanatic] , CLIK, Teoh's etc.

George will be asking the City and Bristol's independent businesses and their supporters to sign up for membership of the campaign which will be aimed at reinforcing Bristol's enterprise culture.

George also owns The Bristol Beer Factory, located just over the road from The Tobacco Factory. It manufactures several award winning ales which it supplies to the Factory as well as several other bars. He also branched out and has another bar on a boat called 'The Grain Barge'. This is also supplied by the Bristol Beer Factory.

Trivia
