Wilson was born in Detroit,

He started with theblues in the late 1960s and was tutored by people likeGeorge "Harmonica" Smith ,Luther Tucker and Peewee Crayton, and was influenced byswamp blues harmonica players likeSlim Harpo andLazy Lester . Before he moved to Austin,Texas in 1974, he was the leader of a band in Minneapolis,Minnesota . In Austin he formed The Fabulous Thunderbirds withguitarist Jimmie Vaughan .Wilson continues to perform up to 300 dates per year at blues festivals and clubs in America,
Canada , andEurope , both as leader of The Fabulous Thunderbirds and with the Kim Wilson Blues Revue.His powerful style of blues harp playing has been described as "loaded with the textures of a full-blown horn section."
