Ann Bates

Ann Bates

Ann Bates was a Revolutionary War spy. Formerly a school teacher. Bates was a loyalist who supported the British king. One of her major accomplishments was coming into General George Washington's headquarters. She was assigned to go spy on American troops. She took the pseudonym "Mrs. Barnes." She carried a token (its identity remains unknown) that would identify her as a British Loyalist to the British. The Americans did not realize this. By the time she reached American headquarters, however, the British officer had left the army. Posing as a peddler, Bates listened in on conversations, checked out gun locations, and even walked into George Washington's headquarters.

Bates later helped other women spies, who remain unidentified, get through safe houses as they made their way back to British territory.
