An Aso Oke Hat is a traditional Yoruba hat that is made of hand woven
African fabric, seeAso Oke fabric , cotton, velvet, or damask. In theYoruba language , this hat is called a fila. Although these hats originated inNigeria they are worn by all men ofAfrican descent . Typically, the top of the hat slouches to one side, and rests above the wearer's ear. It is commonly worn with African formal attire (see Grand boubou) andlace orcotton brocadedashiki suits. It must be noted, that many men wear abowler hat with the lacedashiki suit. However, an aso oke hat or crown stylekufi cap are the most common choices when wearing any other type of formal attire.Former Nigerian President
Olusegun Obasanjo frequently wears these hats. In popular culture, the aso oke hat has been featured in the film "BarberShop"; Dinka, aNigerian American character, wears an aso oke hat during the entire movie. The hat was also featured in the movie "Phat Girlz ". The film "" features an aso oke hat. Although the word "boubou" is mispronounced, and the character is wearing adashiki and not aSenegalese kaftan , this film is unique because it features afly-whisk .
