Itzam Cano

Itzam Cano (born in Mexico City, Mexico) is a Mexican jazz bassist. He carried out studies of etnomusicology at the Escuela Nacional de Música from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) from 1997 to 2001.

He studied electric bass and contrabass with Enrique Valadéz in 1995; with Sósimo Hernández in 1997 and with Aarón Cruz in the year 2000.

His development in musical aspects such as improvisation, jazz theory and harmony has been consolidated in workshops given by Francisco Téllez, Remi Álvarez, Fred Frith, Salvador Rodríguez, just to mention a few, in Mexico City.

In late 2005, he joined free jazz ensemble Zero Point, he came in place of experimental guitar player Julio Clavijo (Mandorla). In september 2006, Zero Point participates in the Japanese New Music Festival (Tatsuya Yoshida, Makoto Kawabata y Atsushi Tsuyama), carried out at Multiforo Alicia in Mexico City. By 2007, Zero Point edits its first digital album (DL-CD Download Only Release) at Ayler Records, Swedish company specialized in production and spread of historical and contemporary free jazz. According to Mike Szajewski, radio host specialized in free jazz from WNUR 89.3 FM, in Chicago, U.S., Itzam is: “ […] a young Mexican bassist who demonstrates a pension for furious, pulsating improvisation”.

Currently he is part of Antimateria, Solsur, conducted by Fernando Martínez and Zero Point. He is a member of the Orquesta Sinfónica Marista and has been part of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Puebla and the Orquesta de Percutoris from the Escuela Nacional de Música at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (ENM-UNAM).
