Kirkuk Air Base

is a military airbase located near Kirkuk, Iraq.

General Information

Kirkuk Regional Air Base is home to the 506th Air Expeditionary Group. The group maintains security at the base, conducts safe flying operations and actively supports base agencies. The 506th AEG comprises six squadrons and more than 900 Airmen.

Kirkuk AB is also home to the 370th Air Expeditionary Advisory Group, which provides guidance to Iraqi pilots at their flying training school here. The 727th Expeditionary Air Control Squadron, which provides radar command functions for the Northern Iraq region, also operates out of Kirkuk AB.

The base hosts a total force of more than 4,000 people, including members of the U.S. Army 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division and the U.S. State Department Provincial Reconstruction Team. The 506 AEG helps support each of these agencies in their efforts to achieve the final goal of ensuring freedom flourishes in Iraq.

Units

The six squadrons that comprise the 506th AEG are the 506th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron, 506th Expeditionary Communications Squadron, 506th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron, 506th Expeditionary Medical Squadron, 506th Operations Support Squadron and 506th Security Forces Squadron.

Organization

The 506th AEG falls under the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing at Balad Air Base, Iraq. The 332nd AEW is considered the most forward deployed Air Force Wing in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The heritage of the 332nd AEW is tied to the famous 332nd Fighter Group led by the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. The wing is also responsible for the 407th Air Expeditionary Group at Ali Base, Iraq, and the 447th Air Expeditionary Group at Sather Air Base, Iraq.

Location

Kirkuk AB lies in northeastern region of Iraq in the outskirts of the city of Kirkuk, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country. Kirkuk is approximately 180 miles north of Baghdad.
