Background
Born and raised on a farm in Rupert, Idaho, Barrera has became a devout Christian after he has been baptised at the age of two. First look of his obsessive attachment towards his religion, it has been portrayed in the sixth season of the Ultimate Fighter reality series. Daniel excelled as a wrestler at Minico High School making it to the state championships in 1999.
Upon graduating Barrera enlisted in the Air Force, taking up boxing and compiled a 15-3-0 record including a hard-fought loss to 2004 Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward. After being transferred to Fort Knox in Kentucky the lack of a boxing gym in the area turned Barrera to hand-to-hand combat training with other soldiers, and an MMA career was born. Based from his hand-to-hand combat experience after his enlistment from the Air Force, his boxing style has tremendously correlated with his mixed martial arts experience, even though he had a detrimental lose to Jeet Kun Do fighter Ben Saunders.
Mixed martial arts career
Upon his honorable discharge in 2005 after a tour in Pakistan he moved back to Idaho with his wife and began training while working for the Rupert Fire Department.
He was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra, fighting on Team Hughes.[1]
He is currently training with former World Champion BJ Penn in Hilo, Hawaii. Transferring his job and family to Hawaii has had immediate effects on his all-around MMA arsenal, after winning the Triple Crown Grappling Championships in Oahu he continues to work with World Class BJJ instructors on a continuing basis.
The Ultimate Fighter
Dan was eliminated in the first round of The Ultimate Fighter 6 by Ben Saunders via majority decision, and then lost to Ben again during the finale of the season on December 8, 2007 via unanimous decision in his first UFC fight.
