The
commander in chief of the1st Southern Expeditionary Fleet based inSingapore was named commander in chief of the newly created Tenth Area Fleet on1 February 1944 . As theSouthwestern Area Fleet command staff was isolated in thePhilippines , a new command structure was necessary to direct the 1st and2nd Southern Expeditionary Fleet s and surviving elements of theIJN 5th Fleet . It was supported by theIJN 13th Air Fleet . The 10th Area Fleet had responsibility for the defenses ofIndonesia andIndochina . It lost most of its combat capability with at theBattle of the Malacca Strait and was disbanded at the end of thePacific War .
