Table of Historical Maps

Notes on Usage

This table is an auxiliary collection to the existing and the and map tracking structures. Any suggestions for automatically reconciling these repositories would be welcome (to ).

This table is intended to accumulate entries on as many of the Wiki system historical map image resources as possible, with one central location where pointers to all such resources reside. Keeping the data entries as simple, consistent, and general as possible is a priority.

One possible use of the table is to export it to a spreadsheet (cut and paste works - but be mindful of formatting issues). Then, different filters and sorting operations will give the user a sequence of historical maps on any subject of interest.

uggestions for Contributors:

#When entering, place the new entry in order by "From" date, then, if further ordering is necessary by "Region" (larger region to smaller, northern to southern, etc.)
#If possible, a region should link to an article covering its overall geography.
#Keep table entries as simple and consistent as possible.
#Let the actual map image file drive the entry (for instance, if the map itself or its title has dates indicated - use those). Interpret dates From and To when there is no other way of assigning them.
#Let the associated metadata speak for itself concerning source, history, defects, applications, linked entries, etc.
#Reference the Map Type Notes and the Map Made Notes sections for the contents of these columns.

Map Type Notes

All maps show at least some geographical features, such as ocean and lake shorelines, rivers, mountains, and forests, at some level of detail and accuracy.

* Political maps feature the point location of populated places (such as cities) and the areal boundaries of political or cultural entities.
* Language maps feature the areal boundaries of languages.
* Military maps feature the linear tracks of military expeditions and/or the outlines of military formations.
* Exploration maps feature the linear tracks of explorers and the features they have encountered.
* Economic maps feature the point location not only of populated places, but of economic resources, manufactures, and industrial production, as well as linear routes of trade.

Map Made Notes

A date or keyword in the "Made" column is intended to quickly identify the provenance and age of the historical map image resource.
* The best accredited date it was drawn if it is an Old Map.
* The word Unknown if it is an Old Map which is clearly not recent, but the exact date is not evident.
* The word Recent if it is a recently constructed interpretation of the historical situations portrayed.
