Felix Galimir (
12 May 1910 ,Vienna –10 November 1999 ,New York ) was anAustria nJew ishviolin ist andmusic teacher .He studied with
Adolf Bak andSimon Pullman at the Vienna Conservatory from the age of twelve and graduated in 1928. With his three sisters he founded theGalimir Quartet in 1929 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the death ofLudwig van Beethoven . During the early 1930s Galimir studied withCarl Flesch inBerlin and in 1936, he joined theVienna Philharmonic Orchestra, however he was later expelled due to his Jewish background. He then immigrated toPalestine to join the newly foundedIsrael Philharmonic Orchestra .In 1938 Galimir moved to New York, where he founded another quartet and served as concertmaster of the
NBC Symphony Orchestra from 1939 to 1956. In the 1950s he began acquiring a reputation as a good music teacher and began teaching atThe Juilliard School in New York in 1962 and from 1972 at theCurtis Institute of Music inPhiladelphia . In 1976 he began teaching atMannes College of Music in New York.Galimir died on 10 November 1999 of natural causes and has since been honoured with numerous memorial concerts and competitions made in his name.
