John (Jock) Robert Liddell (
October 13 1908 –July 23 1992 ) was a British writer, best known for his criticism of thenovel , and for his biography of the poetCavafy . He was also a novelist, travel writer and poet.He was educated at
Haileybury School and theUniversity of Oxford . In the early 1930s he was a close friend ofBarbara Pym , while working in theBodleian Library . He appears as Dr. Nicholas Parnell, a character in her novel "Some Tame Gazelle ".During
World War II he was one of theCairo poets . After the war he resided inAthens .Works
