Publications

In the 1970s, the Eberles published a pornography publication called "Finger", and in the 1980s, they edited the soft-core pornography magazine "L.A. Star". Since the book was published by Lyle Stuart in l986, the Eberles have been cited as experts in sexual abuse trials. They were featured speakers at a conference of the Victims of Child Abuse Laws, a group formed to protect accused parents. |publisher=No Status Quo |date=1988 |accessdate=2007-08-21 ] "Finger" promoted the radical left "underground" libertarian or utopian philosophy of free sexuality. "Finger" was self-defined as a "reader-written" magazine. Virtually all the controversial content was submitted by readers and printed uncensored and unedited, often as photographs of the handwritten letters and drawings of the original submittals. All content could therefore be argued to be in de-facto accord with community standards in as much as it was wholly created and written by that community.

Paul Eberle in the 1970s published a children's book called "Mr. and Mrs. Pussycat," "The World's Worst Poems," among others.

They published "The Politics of Child Abuse" (1986), on false allegation of child sexual abuse in the day care sex abuse hysteria in progress in the USA at the time, and in 1993, "The Abuse of Innocence", covering the McMartin preschool trial. Alan Dershowitz called the book, "The Abuse of Innocence", "... a wake-up call to those who believe that prosecutors and their experts can be trusted to do justice in the emotional context of child abuse." In 2006, Paul Eberle published a book on the phenomenon of road rage.

Criticism

The Eberles based on their history as editors of pornographic publications were portrayed as "former child pornographers" with a hidden interest in covering up child abuse by their critics, such as Patricia Toth, director of the National Center for the Prosecution of Child Abuse. Jan Hollingsworth's review of "Innocence" for the Tampa Tribune quoted claims that "For a period of time during the 70s, Paul and Shirley Eberle were the most prolific publishers of child pornography in the United States", drawing on material published in "Ms. magazine" and "Random Lengths", a San Pedro bi-weekly newspaper, apparently supplied by San Bernardino deputy sheriff Toby Tyler. In 1988, the prosecutors in the Kelly Michaels case claimed to have established in court that the Eberles were "child pornographers" [cite news |title=Judge denies mistrial in sex-abuse case |quote= "A state judge yesterday refused to declare a mistrial in a 7-month-old child sex-abuse case over the remarks of a prosecutor, who had called the authors of a book recommended by a defense witness "child pornographers" ... Superior Court Judge William F. Harth denied the motion yesterday, saying use of the word "pornographer" was not improper ... "We established that some of the literature he relied on {as an expert} was written by child pornographers," Goldberg said outside the courtroom yesterday ... He was referring to a book titled "The Politics of Child Abuse," by Paul and Shirley Eberle. |publisher=The Associated Press |date= 1988-01-22|]

John Earl, who worked with the Eberles on their McMartin book, defended the Eberles, claiming that these accusations were "a projection of their own vested interest in maintaining a 'child abuse industry'", on the part of "ideologically entrenched child protection professionals".
