Garyville is a census-designated place (CDP) in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,775 at the 2000 census. Garyville has the distinction of being the location of the most recent oil refinery built in the United States in 1976 by Marathon Petroleum Company.

Geography

Garyville is located at coor dms|30|3|26|N|90|37|7|W|city (30.057346, -90.618488).GR|1

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 22.4 square miles (58.0 km²), of which, 20.9 square miles (54.2 km²) of it is land and 1.4 square miles (3.7 km²) of it is water. The total area is 6.43% water.


= Demographics = As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,775 people, 913 households, and 717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 132.6 people per square mile (51.2/km²). There were 984 housing units at an average density of 47.0/sq mi (18.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 46.49% White, 52.43% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.72% of the population.

There were 913 households out of which 36.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% ware married couples living together, 24.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% were non-families. 17.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.48.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.1 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $29,375, and the median income for a family was $34,155. Males had a median income of $34,639 versus $21,154 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $11,998. About 24.1% of families and 28.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 38.3% of those under the age of 18 and 30.2% of those 65 and older.

Attempt at incorporation

A referendum on the incorporation of Garyville was held on July 19, 2008 but failed to pass. Louisiana Supreme Court appointed ad-hoc judge Anne Lennan Simon ruled on July 15, 2008 that the areas zoned as designated industrial areas including the areas containing the facilities of Marathon Petroleum Company, Nalco Co., Gramercy Alumina LLC, Cargill Inc. and Evonik-Stockhausen Inc., reducing the proposed city's income from "about $144 million to about $28 million."
