Variation on a Waltz by Diabelli (Liszt)

Variation on a Waltz by Diabelli ( _fr. Variation sur une valse de Diabelli), S.147, is a variation by Franz Liszt composed in 1822 and published as variation No. 24 in Vaterlandische Künstlerverein in 1824. The variation is based on a waltz composed by the publisher Anton Diabelli who also printed the work. This is Franz Liszt's first known and published work. Liszt might have composed this after suggestions from Carl Czerny, his piano teacher who also composed a variation for the set. Liszt was virtually unknown at the time of publishing and he was listed as "Franz Liszt (Knabe von 11 Jahren) geboren in Ungarn" (11 year old boy, born in Hungary). He was the only child composer to write a variation for the set.

Form

The variation is written in C minor, in 2/4 time, in the form of an etude. It keeps to the original theme, in a flowing style of chord passages in an abundance of notes but without any lofty sentiment. While 48 of the composers wrote in waltz measure and triple time, Liszt and Carl Maria von Bocklet are the only ones who varied the measure, and chose 2/4 time. It is the same with the key: 42 of the composers kept to the original C major, Liszt and Franz Schubert chose C minor.
