Elmwood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States, within the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area. The population was 4,270 at the 2000 census. Elmwood was part of neighboring Jefferson's census area from 1960 to 1990. The ZIP code serving Elmwood is 70123.

Geography

Elmwood is located at coor dms|29|57|23|N|90|11|10|W|city (29.956455, -90.186098)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.0 square miles (10.3 km²), of which, 3.7 square miles (9.5 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (7.30%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,270 people, 2,602 households, and 850 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,159.0 people per square mile (448.0/km²). There were 2,928 housing units at an average density of 794.7/sq mi (307.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 80.40% White, 11.62% African American, 0.35% Native American, 4.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 1.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.25% of the population.

There were 2,602 households out of which 11.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 24.8% were married couples living together, 5.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 67.3% were non-families. 55.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.62 and the average family size was 2.47.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 10.1% under the age of 18, 15.6% from 18 to 24, 50.1% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $42,146, and the median income for a family was $61,176. Males had a median income of $41,352 versus $36,693 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $34,329. About 4.6% of families and 13.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 13.5% of those age 65 or over.
