British Army officer,military historian ,author andGovernor of Gibraltar .He studied at
Shrewsbury School , theRoyal Military Academy, Woolwich , andKing's College, Cambridge . He saw war service with theBritish Army inNorway ,North Africa ,Sicily ,Italy and the Far East duringWorld War II . His postwar career included instructing at theRoyal Military Academy Sandhurst and at the British Army Staff College commanding the Queen's Gurkha Engineers in Malaya, and holding senior staff appointments in the British Ministry of Defence.He became a
general officer in 1966 and was quartermaster general to the British Army before becomingGovernor of Gibraltar in 1978.He was knighted in 1971 and died in 1999.
