Karl Stieler (born
December 15 ,1842 inMunich ,Germany ; diedApril 12 ,1885 in Munich) was a Germanlawyer andauthor .Life
Stieler was the son of the painter
Joseph Karl Stieler and his wife, the poetJosephine von Miller .After graduating from school, he studied Law at the University of
Munich . He later transferred to the University ofHeidelburg , where he earned his PhD in 1869.He subsequently worked as a lawyer for about a year, but abandoned that career in favour of extensive travel through
Great Britain ,France ,Switzerland ,Belgium ,Italy , andHungary . Stieler earned his living by writing about these journeys, and other articles, mostly for the " _de.Allgemeine Zeitung ".Stieler returned to Munich to settle down, where he quickly became acquainted with fellow writers
Paul Heyse andEmanuel Geibel ; these two introduced him into the Munich literary circle _de.Die Krokodile ("The Crocodiles"). During these years he became the editor of the " _de. Fliegenden Blätter", and was influenced in his writing byFranz von Kobell .In 1882, Stieler was promoted to Archive Assessor of the
Bavaria n Public Records Office in Munich. He died ofpneumonia there, at the age of 43, onApril 12 ,1885 . At his request, he was buried in _de.Tegernsee .The community of _de. Tegernsee am Leeberghand commissioned the sculptor
Thomas Dennerlein to create a memorial for Stieler.Works
