Irishtown, Nova Scotia

Irishtown, Nova Scotia

Irishtown was a community in Nova Scotia occupied by people of Irish descent. The community was located immediately south of New Waterford and dated back to the early 1900's when Irish settlers took command of the area, giving the community its name.

A battle in 1955 known as the Battle of May Street resulted in the Irish losing control of their community to the Scots. The community was renamed Scotchtown, and has prospered under the Scots for over 50 years.
