History

Kyoto Dentō, a former body of Keifuku began operating the line in 1913 between Shin-Fukui Station and Ichiarakawa Station (now Echizen-Takehara Station) as Echizen Main Line. The entire line was opened in 1918 to Ōno-Jūban Station (later renamed to Keifuku-Ōno), and the line extended to Fukui in 1929. [http://www57.tok2.com/home/tram/echizen.html History of Katsuyama Eiheiji Line] ] In 1974, The sector from Katsuyama Station to Keifuku-Ōno was discontinued, and the route from Eiheijiguchi to Katsuyama was taken into consideration in 1998, which the local community opposed and was taken down. On December 17, 2000, A train entering from Eiheiji Line at Higashi-Furuichi (now Eiheijiguchi) Station could not stop due to brake problems and collided into another train on Echizen Main Line, killing the driver and injuring 24 passengers. Again on June 24, 2001, two trains going different directions collided head-to-head between Hota and Hossaka stations on the Echizen Main Line injuring 24, and forcing Keifuku to cease operation and eventually transfer its Fukui Prefecture lines to Echizen Railway in 2003.
