Henry de Sully was a medieval Abbot of Fécamp and Bishop of Salisbury-elect and Archbishop of York-elect.

Life

He was the son of William, count of Chartres the eldest brother of King Stephen of England and Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester.Davis "King Stephen" p. 97] William was best suited for an administrative post at Sully, France where he was retired and married to Agnes De Sully a woman of admirable beauty attached to the court of Adela Blois, William's mother. William was at first groomed to inherit the comptal throne, but proved to be too aggressive, namely through an incident where he threatened to kill Bishop Ivo of Chartres over a jurisdictional dispute. His mother, Adela of Blois acting as Countess and Lord, replaced him with her second eldest son Thibaud, who ruled well therafter.LoPrete, Kimberly "Adela Countess and Lord" pp216ff]

The marriage of William and Agnes was a happy one and several children were born. The most famous of the children, Henry de Sully, was thus the nephew of the king of England as well as being a Cluniac monk. He was nominated in March of 1140 by his other uncle Henry of Blois to be Bishop of Salisbury, but the nomination was quashed. Later in 1140, after his grandmother's death, Henry was nominated to become Archbishop of York, [http://british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=8457 British History Online Archbishops of York] accessed on 14 September 2007] but his election was again quashed this time by Pope Innocent II because Henry, like his uncle the Bishop of Winchester and Abbot of Glastonbury, wished to hold two posts simultaneously, Fécamp along with the archbishopric.Huscroft "Ruling England 1042-1217" p. 134] Barlow "The English Church 1066-1154" p. 96] He died at Fécamp in 1189.
