Its remains have been found in theJiufotang Formation atChaoyang (PRC ) which is probably of earlyAptian age, around 125-120 million years ago.Verify source|date=November 2007 Only onespecies , "Yixianornis grabaui", is known at present. The species name, Grabau, is named after American PaleontologistAmadeus William Grabau , who surveyed China in the early 20th Century.It was a close relative of "
Yanornis " and together with this and "Songlingornis " forms aclade of early modern birds.
