Saxony-Anhalt ,Germany . It is located at the northern foot of theHarz mountain range, about four kilometres north of the town ofIlsenburg . The small "Ecker" River in the west, a tributary of theOker , forms the border with the town ofBad Harzburg inLower Saxony .The settlement developed in the 16th century at the foot of the "Stapelburg" Castle. First mentioned in a 1306 deed as a property of the Counts of
Wernigerode , it was meant to protect the road to the City ofGoslar near the border with the Duchy ofBrunswick-Lüneburg .The "Ecker" Valley south of the village was the site of the "Jungborn"
destination spa , founded in 1896 by Adolf Just, which hosted notable guests likeFranz Kafka in July 1912. As the "Ecker" from 1949 on formed theinner German border , the facility was closed and finally slighted in 1964.Transportation
Stapelburg has access to the
Bundesstraße 6 federal highway running from the Bundesautobahn 395 nearGoslar to Halle and theBundesautobahn 14 . Stapelburg station is served by theVienenburg -Halberstadt railway line.
