John Mosher Bailey (
August 24 ,1838 –February 21 ,1916 ) was an American politician who representedNew York in theUnited States House of Representatives from 1887–1880.Bailey was born in
Bethlehem, New York . He attended the public schools, andHudson River Institute atClaverack, New York . He graduated fromUnion College ,Schenectady, New York in 1861. During theAmerican Civil War , he entered theUnion Army as a first lieutenant and adjutant of the One Hundred and Seventy-seventh Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry, and served in the Department of the Gulf in 1862. After his service in the war, he graduated from theAlbany Law School in 1864 and was admitted to the bar the same year. He commenced practice inAlbany, New York .Bailey was the assistant district attorney of
Albany County, New York 1865–1867, the collector of internal revenue 1871–1874, and the district attorney of Albany County 1874–1877. He was elected as a Republican to theForty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death ofTerence J. Quinn and was reelected to theForty-sixth Congress and served fromNovember 5 ,1878 , toMarch 3 ,1881 . He was not a candidate for renomination in 1880.Adter leaving Congress, Bailey was the United States consul to
Hamburg, Germany , by appointment of PresidentJames Garfield 1881–1885. He served as a delegate to theRepublican National Convention in 1888 and was appointed by PresidentBenjamin Harrison as surveyor of customs at Albany, New York 1889–1894. He resumed the practice of law. He died in Albany, New York and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery,Bethlehem, New York .External links
