Sandsinkers are lead-free fishing
sinker s made of fabric and filled with sand. Although they do not cast as easily or as far forsurf fishing , they are a healthy alternative to lead for fishing from jetties or any situation where casting distance is not a prime consideration.External links

Note: If you don't know how to use a sewing machine, you can make sandsinkers from a shirt that would otherwise be thrown away. Just cut off the strips that have the buttons and buttonholes, cut into sinker-lengths, tie off one end of each piece tightly, fill with sand, tie other end and make loop in tie for attachment to line.
Sandsinkers have an advantage when casting WITH THE WIND because the wind makes them go further.
When they are dipped into water just before casting, they get heavier in relationship to air. This additional weight vanishes once they are in the water.
Other possibilities:
Baby socks for small sinkers, bigger socks for heavier sinkers. Fine sand will come through the "knit" of socks, so it would be necessary to either use coarse sand or gravel or line the sock with something else.
For big sea-fishing weights, a pants leg from old pants or jeans.
There are ready made sinker-tubes in old sheets and clothing but they need to be discovered.
