Balakan Rayon

Balakan Rayon

Balakan ( _az. Balakən) is a rayon of northwestern Azerbaijan, located beetween Georgia and Russia. It borders Georgia to south, Dagestan of Russia to north. There is an Azerbaijan-Georgia border crossing at Postbina in the rayon that is open to both local residents and foreigners.

Azerbaijanis 72.7%, Avars 21.4%, Georgians 6%.Facts|date=January 2008

Language

The majority of the population speak the Azerbaijan language with a minority of Avar speakers.Fact|date=May 2008

Religion

About 95% of the population of the Balakan rayon is Muslim.
