Born in
Waterford, Connecticut , Bono attended grades K-12 at the Waterford Public School system. He has been a staple in the sport in his hometown. In Waterford High School he played on the Varsity baseball team for all four years. He had one state championship under his belt upon graduating. In 2005, the Lancers won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Tournament as Bono caught the Semi Final and pitched and beat the #1 ranked team in the state in the Final. He pitched a 3 hit shutout in the State Championship game. In September of his senior year, he made a commitment to attend the University of Connecticut where he would have been both a pitcher and a catcher. He was offered a full scholarship to UCONN but upon being drafted he decided to forgo his scholarship and play professional baseball. As a senior during Waterford's run for the state title, Bono was the winning pitcher in every state game up to the state final, which he did not start but would make a valient relief appearance of five innings where he would give up only one infield hit over his five innings.Professional career
Drafted by the
Houston Astros in the 11th round of the 2007 MLB First Year Player Draft. Decided to sign a professional contract and forgo a baseball scholarship to the University of Connecticut. In 2007 Bono was assigned to theGreeneville Astros where he played his first season of professional baseball and went 0-4 over 11 games with a 7.34 ERA.For the 2008 season Bono started 15 games for theTri-City Valley Cats where he was third in the league in innings pitched.Family
Rob is one of four children to Bob and Doreen Bono. His siblings include older brother Michael and younger twin sisters Jaclyn and Lisa. His grandmother Helen Edith Clark Bono was a world class speed skater.
