Kentucky State Reformatory

Kentucky State Reformatory is a medium-security prison for adult males. The prison is located in La Grange, Kentucky, which is about 30 miles northeast of Louisville [http://www.corrections.ky.gov/ksr] . It was established in 1936 to replace the Kentucky State Reformatory located in Frankfurt after a flood damaged the original property [http://www.oldhamcountyhistoricalsociety.org] . The 43 acre facility has the capacity to house 1,998 inmates, thus making it the second largest in the state [http://www.corrections.ky.gov/ksr/] .

History

The original Kentucky State Penitentiary was built in Frankfort in 1798. It was moved to Eddyville in 1884 and the remaining structure in Frankfurt was renamed the Kentucky State Reformatory.
