Wulik River

Wulik River

The Wulik River or Ulik River is an 80 mile long river in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Alaska.

It heads in the De Long Mountains 5 mi. N of Sheep Mtn., at 682300N 1625400W and flows SW to Kivalina Lagoon in the Chukchi Sea, east of Kivalina, and 42 mi. NW of Noatak, Kotzebue-Kobuk Low.

The Umiak Bend is located on the Wulik River, 8 miles NW of Kivalina. Its name originated when an Inuit skin boat (umiak) was destroyed at that point by unusually rough water conditions.

The Inuit name of this river was reported by Lt. G. M. Stoney of the US Navy, in 1886, as "Woleek."
