The Juba Post

The Juba Post

"The Juba Post" is the only independent English-language newspaper in Southern Sudan. It currently has offices in both Juba and Khartoum.

Founded in 2005 after the advent of peace by students from Juba University, it now has a circulation of over 25,000 copies. It is financially supported by advertising and international donors.

The paper was issued a license by the National Press Council on 23 March 2005, but almost immediately ran into difficulty. Following criticism by the newspaper of the expulsion of internally displaced persons from a camp in Khartoum and closing of the independent newspaper "The Khartoum Monitor", the newspaper was shut down by the government and three of its reporters were jailed under the charge of being "illegal journalists." The Post returned to operations shortly thereafter.
