Guppy Guppies is an acronym which stands for
Generation X Yuppies. The combination of the two neologistic generational terms is used to loosely identify anyone who was in their twenties during the 1990s, but felt the common "Generation X" term did not entirely fit them. It is hard to pin down absolute criteria which places someone in this group, but typical characteristics of Guppies are:
*Born between 1968 and 1978; but may apply to anyone who was in their twenties during the 90s
*Middle to upper socio-economic class
*Educated at a formal university or four year college
*Makes consumer purchases based more on product identification than value
*Highdisposable income Whereas other generational terms, like Yuppy, are pejorative, guppie grew out of a self-deprecating awareness by individuals the term applies to. The exact origin of the term is not definitively known, however, it is Guppy legend that an aspiring writer fromSouthern California set out in the early 21st century to coin the term and bring it into the colloquial discourse. The term Guppie has also been used as an acronym for "Gay Urban Professional", instead of the "Young Urban Professional" or Yuppie.
