George Vernon Underwood, Jr. was a United States Army four star general who served as Commander in Chief, United States Southern Command (USCINCSO) from 1971 to 1973. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1937. Later in his career he was chosen to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a master's degree in journalism in 1960. Underwood also served as executive aide to George C. Marshall when he was a Presidential Envoy to China. Underwood was commander of Fort Bliss from 1967 to 1968 [ [http://www.txgenweb3.org/txelpaso/database.html Commanders of Fort Bliss] ] and later was commander, Aerospace Defense Command [ [http://archive.nacla.org/Summaries/V4I6P18-1.htm NACLA Digital Archive] ] and commander, Fifth United States Army. The golf course at Fort Bliss is named after him.
