Laden with oil, vital fluid of war, "Chewaucan" cleared
Baytown, Texas ,22 March 1945 , and reachedPearl Harbor 6 May . Attached to theHawaiian Sea Frontier she carried oil among theHawaiian Islands , Midway, Johnston, Canton, andChristmas Island s until16 June 1946 when she sailed forSan Pedro, California , arriving25 June .Post-war operations
Between
23 September 1946 and4 July 1947 , "Chewaucan" operated out ofSeattle, Washington , on cargo duty to variousAlaska n ports, then sailed in thePacific Ocean , calling at Pearl Harbor andKwajalein and ferrying oil until6 January 1948 . She sailed from San Pedro, California,8 January 1948 and enteredPhiladelphia Naval Shipyard 4 February for conversion to a combination oiler-tanker.Converted to oiler-tanker
"Chewaucan" put out from
Norfolk, Virginia ,7 July 1948 to become one of the original 12 ships of theU.S. 6th Fleet in theMediterranean . Home ported atNaples, Italy , in support of the 6th Fleet, she remained in the Mediterranean except for periodic overhauls in theUnited States through1960 .Her duty changed from direct replenishment of the 6th Fleet to supplying various shore storage facilities when, on
2 August 1957 , she was transferred from the 6th Fleet to Commander, Naval Activities,Italy , for operational control.Decommissioning
"Chewaucan" was decommissioned (date unknown) and struck from the
Naval Register ,1 July 1975 . She was sold under theSecurity Assistance Program toColombia ,1 January 1976 , and renamed "ARC Tumaco" (BT-7). Final disposition: fate unknown.Military awards and honors
