New South Wales ) is anAustralia ncomedian and author who is famous for his portrayal of oddball characters, particularly one known as The Sandman. He is also an actor in both serious and comedic roles, and was married to Australian actress Angela Moore with whom he has one child. He was a member of a cabaret band called "The Castanet Club" in which he played a character called Johnny Goodman. A film was made about the band in (1990).
As Johnny Goodman, Abbott released an eponymously entitled album of 14 original songs in 1988 on the Australian boutique label, Regular Records. Two weeks after its release it was pulled from sale because of potentially defamatory lyrics which clearly identified a residential address and alleged illegal activities.
Abbott hosted the late night TV show, "
In Siberia Tonight " (2005), on SBS. The show's title was inspired by his own Russian heritage and included guests, music, and of course, his mother Evelyn - including a segment called "My Son's Favourite Meals" where we get to watch Steve and Eve bicker comically in the kitchen.Abbott attended
Keira High School , studied drama at the University of Newcastle and is a qualified cricket umpire. His first band of note - The Musical Flags - was a surf dance band in Newcastle with a solid following in the late 70s early 80s. They released one EP of five songs in around 1981 - the writing credits on this album are to all members of the band.
