He was a papal chaplain and proctor as well as a royal envoy. He successively held the offices of
prebend ary ofTeinton Regis and Highworth in thediocese of Salisbury ,precentor of thediocese of York , andarchdeacon of Northumberland. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the bishopric of Salisbury in March of 1288, losing out toLawrence de Awkeburne .
