Herman was a medieval Bishop of Ramsbury and Bishop of Sherborne.

Life

He was a native of Lorraine and was named to the see of Ramsbury shortly after April 22 1045. He visited Rome in 1050, and attended a papal council, along with his fellow English bishop Aldred.Smith "Court and Piety" "Catholic Historical Review" p. 574] He resigned Ramsbury in 1055Powicke "Handbook of British Chronology" p. 247] when King Edward the Confessor of England would not allow the transfer of the see from Ramsbury to Malmesbury.Fact|date=June 2008 Herman wished to take over the abbey and turn it into his cathedral, because Ramsbury was poor, and Malmesbury was a rich abbey.Burton "Monastic and Religious Orders" pp. 14-15] After his resignation, he became a monk at the abbey of St. Bertin at Saint-Omer. He was named to the see of Sherborne about 1058 and was restored to Ramsbury, thus holding both bishoprics together. While bishop he was a patron of Goscelin of Saint-Bertin, a noted medieval historian and musician.Williams "English and the Norman Conquest" pp. 134–135]

He died on February 20 1078.
