He was a native of Lorraine and was named to the see of Ramsbury shortly after
April 22 1045 . He visitedRome in 1050, and attended a papal council, along with his fellow English bishopAldred .Smith "Court and Piety" "Catholic Historical Review" p. 574] He resigned Ramsbury in 1055Powicke "Handbook of British Chronology" p. 247] when KingEdward the Confessor ofEngland would not allow the transfer of the see from Ramsbury toMalmesbury .Fact|date=June 2008 Herman wished to take over the abbey and turn it into his cathedral, because Ramsbury was poor, and Malmesbury was a rich abbey.Burton "Monastic and Religious Orders" pp. 14-15] After his resignation, he became amonk at the abbey of St. Bertin atSaint-Omer . He was named to thesee of Sherborne about 1058 and was restored to Ramsbury, thus holding both bishoprics together.
