- Snipe Dales
Snipe Dales Country Park and Nature Reserve is a protected park in the heart of the
Lincolnshire Wolds , andAONB , located just south ofHagworthingham and about 6 miles east of Horncastle. It is one of the few remaining examples of what the Wolds used to be like with its razed heathland in the western half and a more un-natural mostly coniferous woodland in the eastern half. It is located in one main steep sided valley containing within it many small streams, sourced from springs, that all flow into one that then becomes a tributary to theRiver Lymn .The park is 220 acres in total of which 90 is woodland previously owned by the
Forestry Commission and now by theLincolnshire Wildlife Trust .Lincolnshire County Council own the nature reserve and both work together to maintain the park with the help from two full time wardens and many volunteers. Car parking now costs 75 pence and access is only on foot or wheelchair, bicycles and horses being disallowed. Dogs are permitted to roam free in the wooded area but are not allowed in the reserve. Snipe dales also intersects thePrime Meridian , and a plaque is placed upon the point where it intersects.
