Andrey received a degree in Finance from the
Plekhanov Institute with a specialisation in Finance and Credit.In 1993, Mr Melnichenko became a founder of
MDM Bank , where he held various senior managerial positions, eventually becoming the bank’s President from 1997—2001, and Chairman of the Board from 2001—2005.Mr Melnichenko is an investor in a number of leading Russian industrial companies including:

In June 2008, [http://yachts.monacoeye.com/files/sigma.php Monaco Eye] reported that Andrey was the owner of "Project Sigma", a Philippe Starck designed 119 m motoryacht built by HDW in Kiel. Initially it was known as project SF99 (with 99m length) but as the project progressed the overall length increased to 119m. In 2008 Project Sigma was renamed to "A" and the yacht was registered in Hamilton, Bermuda. According to Desmond Ukandu, "A" has been seen floating around Mallorca this July 2008, in Puerto de Sóller, S'Arenal and playa La Rapita, Ibiza and Formentera as well. It was moored in the 'Ilettas', the Islands between Ibiza and Formentera, in August, 2008. It was moored off the island of Capri in the bay of Naples on the 23rd of September 2008. Later it was sighted and moored in Valletta Grand Harbor, Malta 27th of September 2008. On 4 October 2008 it was seen leaving the
