Biography

Ed Byrne (born December 30, 1946, Philadelphia, PA) is an American jazz trombonist, and composer/arranger from Philadelphia who has worked with many other well-known performing artists such as: Chet Baker, Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Maynard Ferguson, Billy Eckstine, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Archie Shepp, Buddy Rich, Mel Torme, James Brown, Tom Harell and many others. During his sixteen years on the New York City music scene, Ed also performed and composed and arranged numerous recordings. He has toured the Americas, France, Germany, and Sweden.

A Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Studies from the New England Conservatory, Ed is the recipient of many honors: he was nominated “Best Trombone Soloist” by Latin New York magazine; his composition “Fenway Funk” was nominated for a Grammy Award; and Eddie Palmieri’s album, Unfinished Masterpiece, on which Ed played lead trombone, won a Grammy Award.

Dr. Byrne, who has been on the faculties of Berklee College, Baruch College, University of the Arts, Greenfield Community College, and the University of Rhode Island, has written 43 texts on jazz improvisation, such as "Linear Improvisation Method", "The Jazz Guitar Manual" (co-written with nine-string guitarist, Jonny Johansson), and others. An active music educator, many of his pupils have gone onto high-profile careers, such as Kenny Werner, Abe Laboriel, Chip Jackson, Freddie Bryant, Mark Elf, Papo Vasquez, and Gary Dial.
