"Blackbirds of 1928" is a revue with music by Jimmy McHugh and lyrics by Dorothy Fields. It contains the song "Diga Diga Doo", the duo's first hit, "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", and "I Must Have That Man".

History

"Blackbirds of 1928" was the idea of impresario Lew Leslie, who planned to build a show around Florence Mills in New York after her success in the hit show "Blackbirds" in London 1926, but she died before the rehearsals started.

Productions

The original Broadway production opened at Liberty Theatre on May 9 1928 and ran for 518 performances. It was directed by producer Lew Leslie and starred Adelaide Hall and Bill Robinson. Also in the cast were Aida Ward, Tim Moore, Mantan Moreland, Cecil Mack, Nina Mae McKinney.
