Spartak Moscow won their sixth consecutive Russian title, and ninth overall.Spartak and Lokomotiv qualified for the UEFA Champions League 2002-03. Zenit qualified for the UEFA Cup 2002-03.
During the round 22 match between Anzhi and CSKA on 18 August, CSKA and Ukraine goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhun clashed heads with Anzhi striker Budun Budunov.
