Babushka Adoption Foundation is a charitable
non-governmental organization based inBishkek , the capital city ofKyrgyzstan . It was founded in 1999 byMarkus Muller ; the director, based inBishkek , isXenia Kirsanova .The main goal of the foundation is to provide support of elderly who do not have any family members that can provide support for them in Kyrgyzstan. The term "
babushka " is Russian for "grandmother" or "old lady."The objective of Babushka Adoption is not to replace Kyrgyz social institutions, but to work hand in hand with them to help Kyrgyz pensioners in difficult times.
A sponsor can adopt an elderly person for ten U.S. dollars a month; this amount will provide clothing, food, medical care and other important necessities.
