United Kingdom , with a population of under 2,000 people. It lies on the River Alun, on Saint David'speninsula inPembrokeshire ,Wales . St David's is the "de facto"ecclesiastical capital of Wales and birthplace ofSaint David , thepatron saint ofWales .The area was originally known in the
Welsh language as Mynyw or Menevia inLatin and was later renamed in honour of the Saint. The city is built aroundSt David's Cathedral , which in theMiddle Ages was a popular place ofpilgrimage . Next to it, the14th century Bishop's Palace is a ruin now in the care ofCadw and open to visitors. It was once amarcher borough . St David was born toSaint Non at what is now St Non's, a ten minute walk south of the city, in about 500AD . It is also said that he was baptised atPorthclais , now the city's port, and that he founded the city in around 550 AD.Pope Calixtus II decreed that two pilgrimages to St Davids was equal to one to Rome. Because of this a vast income was raised by visiting pilgrims in the Middle Ages. Henry Hicks (born 1837-died 1899), a Welsh
physician , Member of theRoyal College of Surgeons (MRCS ), President of theGeological Society and Fellow of theRoyal Society (FRS). He studied thePrecambrian rocks ofAnglesey ,Caernarvonshire andPembrokeshire , theDevonian rocks ofDevon andSomerset , and cave deposits inDenbighshire . He was born on the 29th of May 1837 atSt Davids , followed in the footsteps of his father Thomas Hicks and studied medicine atGuy's Hospital , and then practised in St Davids from 1862 until 1871.
