Alexander Wood (physician)

Alexander Wood (physician)

Alexander Wood (1817-1884) was a Scottish physician from Edinburgh, who was said to have co-invented the hypodermic needle with French surgeon Charles Pravaz. It was later learned that Wood and Pravaz were not the original inventors of the hypodermic needle. Instead, Francis Rynd was found to be the true inventor of this revolutionary invention, as it is patented in the Irish patents office.

Ironically, Alexander Wood's wife was the first known intravenous morphine addict. She eventually died from an overdose delivered by Dr. Wood's fateful invention.
