The Philadelphia Athletics' 1913 season involved the A's finishing 1st in the American League with a record of 96 wins and 57 losses. Baseball historian, Bill James, ranks the 1913 incarnation of the Athletics' famous "$100,000" infield as the best of all time in major league history (first baseman Stuffy McInnis, second baseman Eddie Collins, third baseman Frank Baker, shortstop Jack Barry). (Bill James, "The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract" (2001), pp. 548-550) The 1975 Cincinnati Reds, 1982 Milwaukee Brewers and 2004 St. Louis Cardinals are the best of the post color barrier, modern player development era.
